Jan Boller

Jan Boller, RN, PhD - Founder

Jan Boller is a health care systems consultant specializing in expert nursing practice development and leadership, team, and organizational effectiveness. Jan has extensive experience in creating conditions for excellence and results as organizations move through major transitions and change. Through her unique background as expert clinician, teacher, organizational leader, and business executive, Jan helps organizations find practical, creative, and effective ways to meet performance targets.

Jan teaches nursing leadership at Samuel Merritt College in Oakland, California and is project director on the White Paper for Nursing Education Redesign at the California Institute for Nursing and Health Care (CINHC), funded by a grant from the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation. The White Paper focuses on strategies for reshaping nursing education to improve the health of Californians. Jan is on the Board of Directors for the Association of Healing Healthcare Advocates.

 

Education:

Jan holds a PhD in nursing from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). At UCSF, Jan’s advisor and dissertation chair was Dr. Patricia Benner, prominent scholar and researcher on expert practice, excellence, power, and ethics. Jan’s doctoral research examined the ecology of exercise in persons on maintenance hemodialysis, focusing on patients’ expertise in self-care and the influence of nursing practice and unit culture on patients’ self-care practices. Jan received her MSN from California State University, Long Beach. Her masters thesis focused on the development of clinical nursing expertise. Jan received her Diploma in Nursing from Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing, in Omaha, Nebraska, and her BS from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Recent Publications:

Jan is the co-author, with Dr. Alan Briskin, of the book, Daily Miracles: Stories and Practices of Humanity and Excellence in Health Care, (2006) published by Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Daily Miracles is the culmination of two years of work facilitating dialogue among nurses about creating conditions for excellence and compassion in everyday nurse/client encounters.
